An individual experiencing depression will feel emotions such as hopelessness and negativity that don’t go away.
This has a small negative impact on daily living.
Symptoms of mild depression include:
- Persistent low mood.
- Feeling hopeless, sad, or helpless.
- Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy.
- Feeling tearful.
- Having low self-esteem.
- Feeling guilt-ridden.
- Feeling irritable or intolerant of others.
- Having no motivation or interest in things.
- Finding it difficult to make decisions.
- Not getting any enjoyment out of life.
This has a more significant effect on daily living.
Major depressive disorder, or clinical depression, can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Mood: A persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, or anxiety
- Energy: A lack of energy, feeling tired, or feeling slowed down
- Sleep: Difficulty sleeping, waking up too early, or oversleeping
- Appetite: Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes
- Thoughts: Thoughts of death or suicide, or attempts to commit suicide
- Concentration: Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Physical: Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems
- Behaviour: Moving or speaking more slowly than usual
- Psychotic: Some people with severe depression may experience psychosis, which includes delusions or hallucinations
A depressive episode is different from regular mood fluctuations and lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. People with clinical depression may also be at high risk of developing self-destructive behaviour.
This causes the individual to experience extreme mood swings from highs, such as joy and excitement, to feelings of complete misery and hopelessness. As a result they may behave in ways others find difficult to understand.
- Symptoms of depression can last for a couple of weeks, a number of months or longer.
- Living with depression can affect how an individual sees themselves. This can lead to them not engaging in a social life, with family or their work.
- Depression is a treatable illness with recognised symptoms.
- Having the opportunity to talk and share how they feel can help some people.
