The Long, Cold Winter Nights Are Rolling In | Do you know someone who needs a little Extra Help?

Now that the clocks have gone back the nights are drawing in and we’re heading towards a long, cold and dark winter. We’re snug and warm in our centrally heated homes but we still need to think about our elderly relatives and neighbours, don’t we?

Spare a thought for your elderly relatives and neighbours this Winter. Do they need a little Extra Help? Our evening service is not as expensive as you may think!

Extra Help can offer an evening service to help people feel safe at home. Our carers will ensure lamps are turned on, windows are shut and doors locked and this simple service can make all the difference to a person that feels vulnerable.

It can be very lonely in the winter and some of our clients get confused when the nights draw in. It seems like night when it’s actually late afternoon, which could cause total mayhem with their body clock. They go to bed extra early thinking it’s night and then wake up in the early hours wondering why it’s still dark. Having a carer visit gives them a sense of time and helps them stick to their normal routine.

Sometimes it’s just a few hours of companionships that’s needed to put someone’s mind at rest. A cup of tea, a sandwich or a warm evening meal can make all the difference to how someone feels in the winter.

This was something that was in great demand when I was a Carer. Checking on people at night to make sure they feel safe and secure and planning an evening of TV or hobbies to help pass the long dark evenings.

Checking simple things like the settings on the central heating, ensuring there are spare light bulbs in the house and enough milk and bread are a few of the things we take for granted ourselves, but when someone is on their own this really helps.

Extra Help is not an expensive service. Prices starting at just £10 per hour (area related) and it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. If you think someone needs the service who is over 65 and cannot afford it, they may be entitled to an Attendance Allowance which can help pay for the service.

Attendance Allowance is a government benefit and we can assist with completing the forms free of charge (they are quite long). To find out more about attendance allowance visit

The winter needn’t be all doom and gloom and personally I quite enjoy it. I also enjoyed my evening visits to vulnerable clients when I was a carer, knowing that I was making a difference to people’s lives.
